It’s all about Jesus…

We are a diverse group of people who have been brought together by the gospel of Jesus Christ.  The gospel is good news that God sent His Son Jesus Christ to rescue & redeem people from the penalty, power and, eventually, the presence of sin. God’s rescue plan to redeem humanity and the rest of creation is the central theme of the Bible and of our lives.  The life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ is the foundation for our hope and is the reason why we gather (John 3:16; 2 Corinthians 5:15-21; Revelation 21).

As a result of God’s saving work in Jesus Christ, we have been given a new identity – both individually and corporately. For those who receive the gift of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ, God gives us a new identity (2 Cor. 5:17).  It is not an identity merely based on what we accomplish in this life, or what others think of us – but an identity that is based on who God is, and what He has done through Jesus Christ.

The Bible now calls us children (John 1:12-13), servants (John 13:1-17; 1 Pet. 2:16), missionaries (John 20:21), ambassadors (2 Cor. 5:16-21), and disciples (Matt. 28:18-20).  The church, consisting of all who believe in Jesus Christ, are identified as the family of God (Eph. 2:19; Rom. 12:10), the body of Christ (Rom. 12; 1 Cor. 12); the bride of Christ (Eph. 5:25-33), and the temple of God (Eph. 2:19-22; 1 Pet. 2:4-10).

Some people seek to define who they are by what they do; in other words, deeds determine identity.  As Christians, we believe our identity should determine our deeds.  Another way to say this is: our mission is rooted in our identity.  As disciples, we seek to learn from the greatest teacher that ever lived: Jesus Christ. As a family loved by God, we seek to love others as family. As missionaries, we seek to tell others about the good news of Jesus Christ.  As servants who have been served by King Jesus, we seek to serve those in need.  Certainly, we fall short in living out our identity, but by God’s grace, we seek to live it out more fully every day.
